Students
from Skipton karate Centre and Skipton karate Kids took part in a grading. Some of those taking part were very young,
one being only five years old. A massive well done to ALL, A special mention to Peter Wrixon, who was attempting his

Dan Grading Passes
Sunday 22 November
4 students
Shweta Sonanis, Hayley Parkinson, Ben Taylor and Jordan Hartley attempted their 1st dan black belt and Faye Cooke attempted
2nd dan black belt. They have been working hard for the last six months, taking private lessons, as well as training twice
weekly and practicing at home. In order to pass the student has to show a wide range of techniques, ranging from kicking,
punching and blocking combinations, kata, self-defence and fighting skills. All of which have to be performed with a high
degree of skill. In order to pass the candidate has to achieve a minimum score of 55%, which they did easily. Shweta Sonanis
71%, Hayley Parkinson 62%, Ben Taylor 68 % Jordan Hartley 59% and Faye Cooke 61%. The worst part of the grading is waiting
to start and waiting for your score. All of the students were very nervous as it means so much to them. Failure was not an
option.” They need to keep training regularly now and who knows in two years Shweta, Hayley, Ben and Jordan could be
taking their 2nd dans and in three years Faye could be taking her 3rd dan. But for the moment they need to enjoy their achievements
and be proud of what they have accomplished", Said Ian Spence (instructor)
Karate
Master Class with Sensei
Stan Knighton 9th Dan
On Sunday the 8 November, Stan Knighton
9th dan, who is the chief instructor of the Shukokai Karate union, came to Skipton to hold a seminar for all the students
who train at Skipton Karate Centre. "We have been teaching Karate in Skipton for about twenty three years now. In that
time, we have had a number of courses with Sensei Knighton. At the end of November, we have four students who are attempting
their first dan black belt and one attempting second dan black belt. So, we thought it was an ideal time to ask him to conduct
a master class for us." Said Ian Spence 5th dan and chief instructor at the club. Rebecca Spence 3rd dan assistant instructor
said of the event "Some of the children attending were as young as seven years old, some adults were considerably older,
but I had better not say just how old. I will say that Sensei Knighton and ourselves were very impressed, everyone put in
100% effort, a massive well done to all".

Sunday 15
November
14 Competitors Entered, 18 Trophies Won. 14 students from our clubs, travelled to Aireborough
Leisure Centre in Guisley. There we took part in an inter club junior grade tournament. All 14 students came back with a trophy
and some came back with two. It was a very successful day, in one of the boy’s kata sections we took first, second and
third place. One of our girls' who is only 3'10" was brilliant, she has never entered a competition before and
still managed to achieve 2nd place. For many of the students it was their first tournament, so they did exceptionally well.
As always, we are incredibly proud of them.
